Parkside Regeneration - Landstruction
Project

Parkside Regeneration

Overview

Designated for regeneration, the site was brought forward for redevelopment as a major scheme alongside the M6 corridor. Landstruction was appointed by Chroma Consulting to deliver large-scale enabling works at the Parkside Regeneration site. The removal of this vegetation supported redevelopment, unlocking investment in planned, sustainable landscaping and wider ecological measures. The result is a site prepared for development, and ready to support not just construction, but regeneration.

Enabling Works

The Site

Parkside was the last deep mine in the Lancashire coalfield, producing over a million tonnes a year at its peak before closing in 1993. Following its closure, the site remained derelict and closed to the public, becoming overgrown with self-seeded trees and shrubs. This created a dense canopy, with ecological surveys identifying low biodiversity.

Large-Scale Enabling Works

Landstruction mobilised to site in mid-November 2025 to deliver an intensive enabling programme across a large site shaped by years of unmanaged, self-seeded growth.

Initial works focused on extensive vegetation clearance to establish safe access routes and defined working zones. Activities were carefully sequenced to support follow-on operations, including stump removal. This reduced risk and allowed the programme to progress efficiently into subsequent phases.

The scale of the site required coordinated plant movements and multiple teams working in parallel. These were managed through disciplined planning, clear supervision and firm programme control throughout.

Responsible Regeneration

Environmental considerations were embedded from the outset. Early surveys identified areas requiring specialist control and containment.

Working alongside appointed ecologists, full site-wide surveys were completed before works commenced. Seasonal timing supported efficient progress while maintaining appropriate safeguards. Monitoring remained in place throughout. This approach ensured the site was not simply cleared, but responsibly prepared. Future ecological value was protected while regeneration could move forward with confidence.

Health, Safety & Compliance

Health and safety formed a core part of project delivery. With works exceeding 500 worker days, the programme fell within formal CDM requirements, including submission of an F10 notification to the Health and Safety Executive.

All operatives and plant operators were fully qualified and certified for the equipment in use, from 360-degree excavators to specialist clearance machinery and chainsaws. Risk assessments and method statements were developed, reviewed and enforced as works progressed.

Welfare facilities were provided on site, giving operatives access to warm, dry and secure spaces. This supported safe, consistent delivery across a demanding programme.

Site Control & Stakeholder Management

Perimeter fencing was installed to secure the site and protect retained trees, with tree protection fencing used where required.

Advance notices were issued ahead of works commencing, supporting clear communication with stakeholders and helping manage expectations locally. Site controls were maintained throughout to protect operatives, the public and the surrounding environment.

Foundations for Regeneration

The enabling works delivered at Parkside form the foundation for the wider regeneration scheme. Following clearance and remediation, future phases are expected to introduce habitat creation, landscaping, footpaths, trim trails and ecological areas designed to integrate with the surrounding environment.

By preparing the site thoroughly at this early stage, Landstruction has helped ensure future works can be delivered efficiently and responsibly. The site is set up for long-term management, landscape quality and considered transformation over time.
