Project
Whittle Brook Park
Overview
Landstruction was appointed by Anwyl Homes to design and construct a high-performance acoustic barrier at the Whittle Brook development in Heywood. Located alongside the M62 motorway, the barrier plays a critical role in reducing noise pollution for new residents and improving the overall liveability of the site.
The structure forms part of the wider infrastructure of the development, combining technical performance with considered landscape integration to support a growing residential community.

Foundations & Structural Preparation
To meet National Highways’ specification, the acoustic barrier required a robust foundation system capable of resisting significant wind loading at a height of six metres.
Each concrete foundation comprised approximately 2.75 cubic metres of concrete. Resin-anchored fixings measuring 550 millimetres were installed to secure the steel stanchions, providing the structural stability required for long-term performance and safety.
Barrier & Site Coordination
The barrier structure was formed using prefabricated three-metre panels, designed to slot precisely into the web of the steel stanchions. Installation demanded specialist long-reach excavators capable of lifting and positioning the panels six metres into the air with a high degree of accuracy.
Works took place within an active housing development, requiring careful coordination with site engineers and other trades. Accurate set-out of stanchion centres was essential, and segregated work zones were established to maintain safety without disrupting progress elsewhere on site.
Acoustic Performance
The barrier selected for Whittle Brook is a reflective acoustic system, a solution commonly used along major motorways such as the M1 and M6. Its purpose is to deflect noise away from the development, significantly reducing the impact of motorway traffic on residential areas.
The effectiveness of the system became particularly evident at the end of Phase Two. From within the development, noise levels were noticeably reduced, by an estimated 25 to 30 decibels. By contrast, stepping onto the motorway side highlighted the volume of sound being successfully contained.
Landscaping
Landscaping was carefully considered to soften the visual impact of the six-metre structure and help it sit comfortably within its surroundings. A selected palette of tree species was planted along the length of the barrier to break up its scale and introduce seasonal interest.
Beyond the barrier itself, Landstruction delivered wider areas of public open space, creating a welcoming and functional landscape for residents. The result is an environment that supports walking, play, and everyday use, complementing the technical success of the acoustic infrastructure.
Maintenance
Landstruction continues to provide aftercare and maintenance to the landscaped areas surrounding the barrier, ensuring they remain well-presented and welcoming as the community grows.
Understanding where we are in the construction phase, where we need to be, and coordinating with engineers is critical on a project like this. With tight working environments and long-reach machinery in operation, planning and precision are everything.
