Landstruction was engaged by Conwy Council to revitalise several key roundabouts across the region, transforming them into vibrant, well-maintained spaces that enhance the area’s visual appeal and support local biodiversity. With a dedicated team and a robust project management approach, we completed each roundabout on a strict timeline, ensuring minimal disruption and seamless coordination.

The primary objective was to replace existing slate with rich planting beds and create an aesthetic that blends native plants with thoughtfully placed trees and wildflower turf. The scope of work included bed formation, topsoil installation, tree planting, and the strategic use of excess slate as a mulch, all guided by the design vision of landscape architect Gwenda.
1. Site Preparation
The project began with the delivery and set-up of an excavator at each roundabout, expertly handled by our team lead, Luke Clowes. To create the planting beds, the existing slate was meticulously removed, allowing us to shape beds that would sustain healthy, thriving plants. This preparation process laid the groundwork for a smooth, efficient planting phase.
2. Topsoil Delivery and Bed Formation
Once the beds were ready, high-quality topsoil was brought in and spread evenly across each bed, establishing a fertile foundation for planting. This critical step ensured optimal growth conditions for the plants, allowing them to establish roots quickly and flourish over time.
3. Plant and Tree Installation
The project required careful logistics coordination, as the plants needed to be delivered to a nearby holding location due to access challenges at the roundabouts. Our team transferred the plants using Landstruction vans and trailers, efficiently transporting them to each roundabout for planting. Following Gwenda’s design, trees were planted in pre-excavated pits, ensuring stability and proper placement.
4. Slate Mulch Application
To complete each roundabout, the excess slate was repurposed as mulch, adding a clean, polished finish to the beds while also helping to retain soil moisture and reduce weed growth. This sustainable approach to materials not only reduced waste but also enhanced the beds’ longevity and aesthetic appeal.
5. Wildflower Turf Installation
For Penhryn Bay roundabout, our team installed specially selected wildflower turf sourced from Wildflower Turf Ltd. This final touch introduced native biodiversity to the area, supporting pollinators and adding seasonal colour to the landscape. The installation process was completed in just two days, leaving the site in pristine condition.
Safety and efficient traffic management were key considerations throughout this project. Quantum, our traffic management partner, secured the inner lanes of each roundabout to create safe working zones for our team. This setup ensured that all work could proceed without disruption to local traffic, protecting both our staff and the public.
Each roundabout was completed within a dedicated six-day period, reflecting Landstruction’s commitment to precise scheduling and timely delivery. The last phase involved coordinating with external contractors for final soil delivery and tree pit preparation, demonstrating our ability to work collaboratively for a cohesive project outcome.
The Conwy Council roundabout project was a showcase of Landstruction’s expertise in landscaping, project coordination, and client communication. Each roundabout now features a sustainable planting scheme that enhances the area’s natural beauty and provides habitat for local wildlife. The use of wildflower turf further contributes to environmental goals, aligning with Conwy Council’s commitment to greener public spaces.
