Designer: Jason O'Donnell
Client: Macmillan Cancer Support
Awards: Southport Flower Show Gold Medal & Challenge Trophy (Best Informal Garden)
We were approached by Garden Designer Jason O’Donnell to aid with the build of The Once Upon A Time Garden at the 2018 Southport Flower Show.
The Garden – sponsored by Macmillan Cancer Support – went on to win a Gold Medal; it was also selected by the judges as the Best Informal Garden at the show.
The garden’s standout feature, a giant storybook with pages made up of dry stone walls, links back to Southport’s 2018 ‘Once upon a time’ theme. Each wall of Jason’s book symbolises a chapter in a cancer patient’s journey, starting with the initial moment of diagnosis.
Also included in the garden are two ‘rhythm lines’, which mimic heart beats and symbolise the energy required to overcome the challenges linked to a cancer diagnosis.
Landstrution’s Managing Director, David Binks said: “It was a real honour to be asked by Jason to build a garden with such a deep and personal meaning behind it. To receive a Gold Medal for the garden is absolutely brilliant and will definitely help in shedding light on the fantastic work that Macmillan Cancer Support staff undertake on a daily basis.”
